In February 2016 we spent a beautiful sunny morning in Belém en route from Sintra to Cordoba. The waterfront was a great place to explore—the Torre de Belém, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos and the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. All the time with the vast expanse of the Rio Tejo estuary flowing slowly beside us and the suspension bridge, the Ponte 25 de Abril, looking down on us.
Our trip to Portugal was very much a short excursion squeezed into a tour around Andalucía. A night in Sagres in the Algarve on the extreme southwest tip of Europe led us to spectacular coastal cliff views. A couple of nights in Sintra just outside Lisbon allowed us to tour some of the quirky palaces and castles, and the gardens. I regretted a bit that we did not manage to get down to the old centre of Lisbon, but Sintra and Belém were well, well worth the time we spent there.
For once the presence of a bridge did not seem to have killed the ferry, which shuttled back and forth all the time we were there. Alas we had many miles to cover to get to Cordoba before nightfall, so we crossed on the bridge not the ferry.
